Walking Safari Seasons:

October-May
(except April):

Serengeti Ecosystem, northern Tanzania: Perhaps the most awe-inspiring scenery in Africa, the Serengeti of Tanzania and Kenya offers massive expanses of grasslands, small hills, rivers and rocky outcrops, which provide habitats for thousands of antelope species, buffalo, and all the big cats.

In a remote wilderness area on the border of the Serengeti National Park, you embark on small walks from a base camp, or longer bush safaris of six to seven days. Maasai tribesmen walk with you, so in addition to seeing wildlife you'll also gain some insight into the language and culture of remote bands of Maasai.

June-October:

Maasai Steppe/Tarangire Ecosystem, northern Tanzania: This is classic East African bush country: huge baobab trees, hidden waterholes, magical acacia forests, and some of east Africas finest elephant country. Birding is fantastic and at certain times of year the wildlife congregates in surprising densities, making for great viewing and exciting experiences. You will either embark on short walks from a small base camp, or venture deeper into the bush for exciting bush safaris of five to six days.

July-October:

Ruaha Ecosystem, southern Tanzania: This is for the seeker of pure wilderness. In Ruaha you embark on truly epic walking safaris deep into the bush. They are not for the light-hearted, but for those who want remote adventure on foot in genuine wilderness. The terrain is rugged, but the reward lies in seeing what few ever see: places in East Africa that are still as wild as they were a century ago.

East Africa Walking Safaris in Kenya and Tanzania

East Africa Walking Safaris in Kenya and Tanzania

Walking safaris in Tanzania and Kenya offer a chance to sample East Africa's great diversity of landscapes. These include Tanzania's Serengeti plains and woodlands, the waterholes of Tarangire National Park, the Miombo woodlands and rivers of Ruaha National Park and the rainforests at Lake Tanganyika. The area also offers an unrivalled diversity of wildlife for seekers of experiences on foot in some of east Africas most remote wildernesses.

Few companies can offer walking safaris to such famous areas as Serengeti National Park, Ruaha National Park, and the Maasai Steppe/Tarangire Wilderness. The walks brought to you by Go2Africa focus on seeing these remote parts of the great ecosystems as well as those which are either off-limits or unknown, the hidden areas where tourists are absent, game prolific and the land goes on seemingly forever.

Walking safaris in Kenya and Tanzania involve vast tracts of unfenced wilderness and the freedom to explore the bush and observe some of its great wildlife on foot.

On safari in Tanzania, you leave behind the roads and safari lodges and walk off to remote places where you can camp where you choose, free from the constraints of permanent accommodation facilities and other people. This is the safari of old: mobile camps, professional guides, and huge wilderness areas to explore.

Details

Driven Safaris

Vehicles: On driven safaris, you'll travel in Land Rovers and Land Cruisers equipped with emergency radio call and modified with open roof hatches for better game viewing and photography. Game drives happen in the early mornings and afternoons and often you can go on night game drives.

Walking Safaris

Guides and Walking: Walking safaris give a very different experience to driven safaris. You generally do not see as much large wildlife on foot as you do when driving, nor at as close a range (although sometimes you do!). But you'll have an opportunity to see the tracks, signs, and smaller indications of wildlife, giving a finer perspective on the east African wilderness. All guides are trained professionals, and each carries a rifle for protection. Walks can be relaxed strolls just to get out of the vehicle, or longer walks in the bush - it is entirely up to the group.

Camping

Camps: Classic camping involves walk-in tents, beds and bedding, hearty food, warm showers and cold drinks. A cook prepares all the meals and a crew erects the camp before you arrive and breaks it after you depart each day.
